Exigence - or - Why I Felt the Need to Create this Blog

12 August 2012.

Wow. 6th Edition is here, and I feel like it incorporated many facets of our house rules here are the Lower Register.

Go us. GW, you can have those for free.

Plz look for some updates soon as I try to figure out how my precious BA will fit in to the world of Overwatch and Random Charging distances. Gotta say, so far, I am loving the idea of 5 attacks per Death Company Marine (2 base, 2 for charging, 1 for extra weapon).

Why Lower Register? Pedro and I started playing various wargames about five years ago, but found that we just didn't have time to complete standard games. We, along with our limited pool of playing partners, decided that we would become good at skirmish games that we could enjoy on a regular basis. So, over time we amassed a body of experience in Kill Team, Warmachine, Infinity, and other such games. This blog is the natural outgrowth of that experience, and our desire to share it with you all.

A new low?

So as my first post I wanted to throw something out there that would really challenge the minds here on the "Lower". So carefully take some time and think about how you would set up a game that is based around the final climax of a battle, when both opposing heroes have that game changing epic duel that decides the fate of both sides. What would be the point restrictions? Would you allow an honor guard? How would you structure this game?

  1. Interesting question. Actually I have given this some thought in the past.

A titanic clash of heroes duking it out at the swirling center of the battle!

So, the first thing that I would do is eliminate points restrictions. Base the game entirely on the FOC of: 1 HQ. This would technically allow any supernumerary unit, such as Space Marine Honor Guard, Inquisitorial Retinues, or Fenrisian Wolves, or any other units that take up no FOC slots.

But the points totals are not irrelevant. Basically it would work as a bluffing/bidding war. The player with the least amount of points on the table chooses where to deploy and whether to go first or second (with an initiative steal chance, just to keep it interesting.)

I would use a 3' X 3' board with one significant piece of multi-level area terrain in the very center.

I think that this would be interesting to play out with the Kill Team "Independent Operators" house rule. Also, the "Specialist Troops" rule from KT might be in order (that needs some thought).

Night Fighting in effect for the first round of combat. This make acute senses not stupid. We can call it "Duel at Dawn!"

Victory conditions would be simple: Take out the opposing HQ choice.

There are certainly HQ choices that will test the limits of this rule set:

Marneus Calgar (with his 3 Honor Guard, right? fact check me here.)

Bjorn the Fell Handed is a beast of a Dreadnought

Njal (the wolves' shaman psyker) and his storm ability...

Asdrubael Vect with his Dais of Pain (dunno if you could take this actually, as it might require an Elites choice for the other models.)

Tyranid HQ choices with the ability to spawn new Tyranids... nightmare time.

    Daemons that do the same.

Lelith Hesperax, and her WS 9, BS 9... and insane amount of attacks.

  3. Ok, I have actually formulated two slightly different Kill Team variants based on your question. Look for them in the right hand column on the front page of this blog.

"Maelstrom of Battle" describes an HQ choice in the thick of it with their Supernumerary companions.

"Duel at Dawn" describes a mano-a-mano match between HQ choices meeting in the pre-dawn hours to settle a score.

Let me know what you think.
