Exigence - or - Why I Felt the Need to Create this Blog

12 August 2012.

Wow. 6th Edition is here, and I feel like it incorporated many facets of our house rules here are the Lower Register.

Go us. GW, you can have those for free.

Plz look for some updates soon as I try to figure out how my precious BA will fit in to the world of Overwatch and Random Charging distances. Gotta say, so far, I am loving the idea of 5 attacks per Death Company Marine (2 base, 2 for charging, 1 for extra weapon).

Why Lower Register? Pedro and I started playing various wargames about five years ago, but found that we just didn't have time to complete standard games. We, along with our limited pool of playing partners, decided that we would become good at skirmish games that we could enjoy on a regular basis. So, over time we amassed a body of experience in Kill Team, Warmachine, Infinity, and other such games. This blog is the natural outgrowth of that experience, and our desire to share it with you all.

Infinity Holocard with stats

Pedro here reporting out our Orktoberfest experience. Well actually I am here to talk about 1 thing and that is Infinity. We tried it out during Orktoberfest and loved it so much that we ended up playing in the vast majority of the time. The only other game we played was an introduction game of Warmachine. Don't get wrong we loved Warmachine as well, in fact one thing that we loved about it was the statcards. So that got me thinking, why not build statcards for Infinity?

With the help of my wife and alot patience I was able to pull this together. Would love to get your feedback on the design!

Trainer List for Infinity: 225 Panoceania List

Pedro here, so here is my list for our Infinity training session:

I was going for a very Knight based list here. I basicially picked out the mini's that I thought were the coolest looking and used those...yeah that is how scientific my list creation is at this point in the game.

There are a couple of things that I wanted to have in my army for sure; first is a hacking ability and second is a sniper rifle.

KNIGHT OF SANTIAGO Lieutenant Spitfire, E/M Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW (51 1)
MOV:4-2 CC:18 BS:14 PH:13 WIP:13 ARM:4 BTS:-3 W:2

Trainer List for Infinity: 230 ALEPH Achilles/Asura List

So, Pedro and I set the limits for our Infinity Training:
1) Point cap: 250
2) Model cap: 5
3) Loads of terrain (Ok, I added that one, but it made sense, based on our conversations.)

In the interest of full disclosure for the sake of learning, my list is from the faction ALEPH and consists of the below:

ACHILLES Lieutenant Spitfire, Nanopulser / Pistol, EXP CCW (81 | 2)
    MOV:6-4  CC:20  BS:15  PH:16  WIP:15  ARM:6  BTS:-6  W:3
    Regular, Frenzy, Cube
Martial Arts L4, ODD: Optical Disruptor, Multiterrain, Lieutenant

2x ASURA Hacker  Combi Rifle, Nanopulser / Pistol, AP CCW (77 | 0.5)
    MOV:4-4  CC:16  BS:14  PH:14  WIP:15  ARM:5  BTS:-6  W:2
    Regular, Not Impetuous, Cube
V: No Wound Incapacitation, Multispectral Visor L3, Hacking Device Plus

 235 Points | SWC: 3

If I understand correctly, this list will give me 3 basic orders, plus the Lt. order per turn.  Once Achilles goes impetuous, he will also allow for an impetuous order... or so I understand.

Can't wait to play infinity with the starter rules... (I know that hacking is not in the Starter Rules... but that's ok, this is about learning to play.)

I love how Corvus Belli has this kind of Linux-esque open source, free information thing going.  Makes me and apparently Pedro want to throw money at them.

Cracked Earth Base

Pedro here,

While putting together the new 2 Player Warmachine Box Set I have also started to toy with creating some different bases. After reading a wonderful stage by stage walkthrough for painting Protectorate on brushthralls that also describes an interesting basing technique for cracked earth, I thought I would give it a go.

Step 1: Take a common Warmachine base and cover it up to the crease with Green Stuff. Make sure that you carve out enough time to finish this project before the Green Stuff cures.

Step 2: With a putty tool or toothpick begin to carve out lines in the shape of cracked earth. I used a hexagonal pattern blended with a square pattern. Don't feel like you have to get it symmetric, in fact if it is too symmetric it wont look real!
Step 3: Once the Green Stuff has dried paint the entire surface with Bestial Brown, making sure that you get the paint inside all of the creases.
Step 4: Once the layer of Bestial Brown has dryed, then apply a wash of Delvan Mud. Then apply highlights of 1:3 mix of Bestial Brown and Bleached Bone (I used Privateer Press Menoth White Base but they are basically the same). Make sure when applying highlights that you pick a side of your base that will be the direction of your light source and paint your highlights on the same edge as that source.
And there you have it, paint time was extremely short...about 15 mins and you get a really cool base effect!

WarMachine 2 Player Battle Box

As the Lower Register is a blog that focuses on miniature gaming of a less time consuming construct, I Pedro thought that it would be suitable to explore other gaming genres outside the monopolistic grip of Games Workshop. Don't get me wrong, I love the universe that GW has put together, but it is the only thing that I have known for the first 2 or so years I have been playing and quite honestly I don't any better.

With that being said, a perfect opportunity to dip my "dice" into another arena presented itself with the recent release of the Warmachine 2 player boxed set by Privateer Press. The number one reason that I even began looking into Warmachine, as I must attest here on the Lower Register, is that the games appear to be significantly shorter and contain a lot less models. Being able to play a game in 45 minutes is exactly what we are looking for here on the L.R. and Warmachine seems to fit that mold perfectly.

In addition to the low points cost I have also read several articles online and from what I have seen the game play is very straight forward and balanced, which is a far cry from WH40k (cough..Tau..cough). In fact many current WM players are 40k converts have tasted the excitement of steam powered mayhem and haven't looked back since.

Oh yeah, and who isn't interested in a game that demands you to "Play like you have a pair!"

What's Inside the Box?

  • Introduction To Warmachine Guide
  • Quick Start Guide
  • Mini Official Rule book
  • Mini No Quarter Magazine (Privateer Press version of White Dwarf)
  • 12" Ruler
  • 9 Protectorate of Menoth Resin Models
  • 8 Khador Resin Models
  • 17 character cards
  • (6) six-sided dice
The Paperwork

So my initial reactions to the set was that it really hit the mark on what I believe is the target audience for this product, a complete Warmachine noob! Not only does it give you a full rule book, but the Introduction Guide gives you a great overview of the Iron Kingdom Universe.

The Rulebook is intuitive to navigate and is pretty good quality, although I think that I may wear through it pretty quickly and may have to go after the hardback version before too long.

The Introduction Guide is exactly what a noob like myself needs in order to get a feel for the Warmachine universe. It explains the overall theme of each faction (the Khador and Protectorate more so than the others) and even goes into the Hordes factions, a little cross-sell thank you very much!

No Quarter Magazine has the same purpose of White Dwarf, except this publication seemed to be alot more well balanced. Every issue seems to have the same format (latest releases, tactics, hobby section, battle report) all getting the same amount of coverage. What I didnt see is a magazine that is completely devoted to flavor of the month like White Dwarf tends to end up being. Every No Quarter issue can be useful any Iron Kingdoms player.

After bringing myself up to speed on the general universe I was pretty excited to break into the models! Now I must admit, I am more into this hobby because of the modeling and painting, so I was really interested in seeing some what the other side of the fence had to offer. Just let me tell you Privateer Press did not disappoint!

The Models

Let me just say that these models far exceeded my expectations. First off they were not on sprues, which meant no clipping and filing! Secondly there were minimal mold lines, so again minimal clean up required. Lastly they were made of high quality resin and the detail was amazing.

Not really know what I was getting into I had to somewhat justify spending the cash on this set, so from an investment stand point I also looked at the individual retail cost of the models if they were purchased standalone.

Khador $122.96
2 Heavy Warjacks 2x $34.99
Shocktrooper Squad $44.99
Warcaster $7.99

Protectorate of Menoth $145.95
2 Heavy Warjacks 2x $34.99
Light Warjack $18.99
Exemplar Cinerators $44.99
High Exemplar Kreoss $11.99

First Impressions

Overall I am extremely pleased with the box set. I think that Privateer Press did a great job putting such a valuable introduction to the game on the market. This move will surely add to the already rapidly growing fan base. I for one look forward to delving into the mechanics of the game and also putting a brush on these models! Please stayed tuned as I will share my stage by stage painting of these wonderful models, and Hax and I battle it out with a couple of test games during what he is calling "Orktober Feast".

Tabletop Drinking Wargames

Was just perusing Spikey Bits blog, and I came across the rules for Beerhammer.  There is one weird little rule that makes this work as a no kidding drinking game.  This was too good not to repeat (with slight edits):

One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer: At the start of his player turn, each player gets one bourbon (2 oz, straight shot), one scotch (2 oz, rocks... water optional) and one beer (12 oz. glass, can, or bottle).  Drinks may be drunk at any time.  A player may not have more than one of any drink at a time.

One Bourbon:  Drink the shot of bourbon. Ignore any one failed save.

One Scotch:  Drink the glass of scotch. Re-roll any one d6 or make your opponent re-roll any one d6.

One Beer:  Drink the whole beer. After any roll of yours, replace any one d6 with either a 1 or a 6.

Spikey Bits, thank you for Beerhammer!  Bad to the bone baby.  I think those bennies would be tempting enough to make a player drink.  Two turns at maximum effect, and you're six drinks in to a bender.  That's enough to start anyone down hangover highway.

Assassins, You're Doing it Wrong

So, GW, I know you want to sell models.  But don't you think that assassins deserve a little bit of special treatment?

I have three weird little rules that might bring assassins back in to fluff alignment:

FOC: 1 unit with the Infiltrate USR may be taken for every 500 points in an adversary's army.

Victory condition:  If all HQ choices are eliminated from opponent's army, you immediately win.

Special Rules:  5th Column - Every unit has the Scouts USR.

Simple.  Fluffy.  Effective.

Codex breakdown of what would be playable:

Units are:
Grey Knights: Vindicaire, Eversor, Callidus, Culuxus; Death Cult
Orks: Commandos, Gretchin
Eldar: Rangers/Pathfinders
Tau:  Kroot, Stealth Squads
Chaos:  Chosen
Necrons:  Wraith
Dark Eldar: Mandrakes
Tyrannids: Yrmmgarl, Lictor
Moar?

Oh yes, moar!

Space Marines:  Shrike, Scouts
Blood Angels: Scouts
Space Wolves: Wolf Scouts, Wolf Guard Battle Leader (Wow!)

Even moar?

So the idea here is to change the victory condition and change the FoC to match.  Balanced?  Not likely.  Suggestions welcome.

Project Ghazghkull Thraka

Pedro here...working on a special project, well not that special but thought I would just document the progress of my painting of the Citadel Finecast Model Ghazghkull Thraka. I dont claim to be the most talented painter in the world so this is as good as it gets for me.

Step 1: Priming the model

Primed in Chaos Black

Step 2: Base layer

All metal: Tin Bitz
Pistons: Mechrite Red and Boltgun Metal
Arms and Face: Knarloc Green
Teeth: Bestial Brown

Step 3: TBD (Stay tuned as I work through this model with more updates!)

Tau, eh? Brave!

So, I feel the need to commend my brave companion, Pedro, for his choice in army for the NoVA Open.

He brought Tau.  Brave.

We knew it was a 4th Edition Codex army.  But, in fact, neither Pedro nor I had any concept of why the Greater Good was such a brave choice to bring to a tournament.  Brave, brave, brave.  That's what random people kept on coming up to tell him.

And then one kind soul actually took the time to instruct Pedro in how exactly he could increase his battlefield efficiency.  Markerlights, my friends.  Pedro got a crash course in how to use the Tau Markerlights.  And then for three straight games, the Blood Angels under my command had no chance.

The other phrase that sagacious NoVA participants kept throwing at us was "Target Priority."  At first we thought that they might be making fun of us.  You know, dragging up some obsolete 4th Edition rule and holding it over us noobs.  That actually wasn't the case, and the commenting wargamers were not actually condescending to us neophytes.  "It's all about target priority" actually means, "Actively pursue the part of your adversary's army that will have the most significant game effect for the least expenditure of your own resources."

The analysis of target priority is a complex interaction of specific army rules, 40k general rules, winning conditions, strategy, and player ability. For me in the NoVA games that meant going after Pedro's Pathfinders with my Jump Infantry.

So, based on his player base, it appears that Tau was a perfectly reasonable choice for Pedro, and by the end of six games, both Pedro and I realized that it really might actually be about prioritizing your targets after all.

We both learned a lot from the NovA.  Thanks again, Mike Brandt and the NoVA Staff!

"Look, there's a brave Blood Angels player that doesn't understand target priority!"

Custom Models from Shapeways.com

A quick perusal of Shapeways.com has yielded all sorts of custom possibilities for our hobby.  I cannot think that GW is too happy about this development.  How long will it be before someone models and uploads a whole sprue to this kind of site?  I am sure that Mark Wells is trying to find an attack lawyer as we speak.  Hint: Search "28mm" in the shapeways search.  Unique results until approximately page 30.

Hey GW, good luck stopping the march of progress!

Intredasting links:

Why, yes, I do believe that there should be a better way to find Cyclone Missile Launchers!

I can think of at least a Thousand uses under the Son for this headdress.

This store's name really speaks for itself: Dynath40k.  But there is also some fluff about Legions II and XI having female primarchs.  Above are female space marine legs, contra-posto-esque.  You'll have to go to the site to see the torsos; they give a whole new meaning to nipple-wing.

These gangers are apparently not for sale, but they deserve a mention for quality.

Wait a minunte, something about this seems familiar.

How about twenty of them?

So, I guess that this is a good example of a side-by-side of the model and the print.

Wall of Dorn

This is what happens when I try to fill out all of the FoC in my spare time.  Too bad that Black Templars can't be placed in the same army.  I really think that the Sons of Dorn need their own codex (combining Imperial Fists, Crimson Fists, and Black Templars in to one codex.)

Also, this is perhaps my favorite Primarch Rogal Dorn picture.  It screams HUGE!

Dark Solitaire

WSBSSTWIALdSv
Solitaire9533284-3++
Unit Composition:1 (A Solitaire is a non-unique HQ choice in a Dark Eldar Army.)
Unit Type:Infantry
War Gear:Holo-suit; Clone-field; Harlequin's Kiss; Shuriken pistol; The Rive Blade; Plasma grenades; Flip-belt; Webway Portal (+35 points)

Special Rules:May take Harlequins as Troops choices; Fleet of Foot; Dance of Death; Spiritless; Supernatural Dodge (3+ invul.); Infiltrate

The Rive Bladeis a Husk Blade that allows re-rolls on failed to-hit and to-wound rolls.
SpiritlessA Solitaire has no leadership value, and therefore never has to take related tests.  Attacks that rely upon the Solitaire's leadership value automatically fail.

Basically, I have been searching for a fluffy way to make a Dark Eldar themed all Harlies list. This is the best that I can come up with that keeps it simple, and yet covers all the aspects of Solitaire fluff.

(most of this was inspired by the Tempus Fugitives CODEX: Harlequins .PDF: link here)

***EDIT: Apparently, some folks like to use Lady Malys as a counts-as Solitaire, and just allow Harlies as troops.  There are rules, and then there are rules.

Primarch Sanguinius: Rules in Theory

Blood Angels

Sanguinius, PRIMARCH OF THE BLOOD ANGELS
POINTS: 500 + points for HQ models
FORMATION: Sanguinius and an bodyguard of between 2 and 12 BA HQ choices chosen from Codex: Blood Angels.
SANGUINIUS: Sanguinius is treated as a Monstrous Creature with the following profile and special rules.
WSBSSTWIALDSV
10676566102+/4++
UNIT TYPE: Monstrous Creature
SPECIAL RULES
Eternal Warrior, Furious Charge, Feel No Pain, ATSKNF
Angelic Gifts: Foresight, Wings of the Angel, Psyker
Psychic Powers: All from C:BA.
Wargear: Infernus pistol, Spear of Telesto OR Sanguine Sword, Artificer Armor
The Spear of Telesto: Spear of Telesto counts as a master-crafted power weapon that causes Instant Death and grants +2 I.  The Spear also has a shooting attack with the following profile:
Range: Template, S: 7,  AP: 2, Assault 2, Rending (this attack will not affect BA models)
The Sanguine Sword: Sanguine Sword counts as a master-crafted force sword that grants +2 S.  The Sword improves Sanguinius' invul save by 1 in close combat.  If equipped with the SS, Sanguinius may re-roll failed psychic power rolls.

Foresight: May lose 1 wound point to force a re-roll on any roll from any player.
Wings of the Angel: Acts in the movement phase as if equipped with a jump pack.
(This version of Sanguinius is based loosely on the Apocalypse Rules for the Demon Primarch Angron... Reason being that Angron and Sanguinius are two sides of the same coin.  These rules are, to the best of my knowledge the only published rules for a primarch of any kind.  I tried to work interpolatively within C:BA.  This entry may warrant some revisiting based on more C:BA readings.)
