Exigence - or - Why I Felt the Need to Create this Blog

12 August 2012.

Wow. 6th Edition is here, and I feel like it incorporated many facets of our house rules here are the Lower Register.

Go us. GW, you can have those for free.

Plz look for some updates soon as I try to figure out how my precious BA will fit in to the world of Overwatch and Random Charging distances. Gotta say, so far, I am loving the idea of 5 attacks per Death Company Marine (2 base, 2 for charging, 1 for extra weapon).

Why Lower Register? Pedro and I started playing various wargames about five years ago, but found that we just didn't have time to complete standard games. We, along with our limited pool of playing partners, decided that we would become good at skirmish games that we could enjoy on a regular basis. So, over time we amassed a body of experience in Kill Team, Warmachine, Infinity, and other such games. This blog is the natural outgrowth of that experience, and our desire to share it with you all.

Deep Striking and Combat Squads

As there is a chance that this question will arise, vis-a-vis my NoVA Open BA list, I wanted to get it out on the table early:

Q: "Can a deepstriking unit combat squad when it is deployed on the table?"

A: My research points to yes. Below is the rules breakdown.

Rules Citations:
Reserves rule P.94 BRB, "Rolling for reserves", 2nd paragraph, first sentence. All rolls are finished, the models must immediately be deployed. Combat Squad rule now comes into effect before placing models in their final position of deployment.

Deep Strike rule P.95 BRB, last sentence of first paragraph. These models are arriving from Reserve, so the Reserves rules are followed to determine their arrival or non-arrival. If successful, according to the Reserves rule the models are now deployed. Combat Squad rule is now applied before placement of initial model for the Deep Strike point. Since there are two squads, this means that both are placed separately, scattered for separately and take Deep Strike Mishaps (if any) separately.

Conclusion:
Successfully roll for Reserves > available for deployment > Combat Squad > act of deploying, either by normal means or Deep Strike/Outflank.

Caveat:
The BA FAQ has the following to say. (link) But note that this is in the context of drop pods.

Q: Can you take a Drop Pod with a 10-man squad and then put a combat squad in it, deploying the other combat squad on the table, or leave it in reserve but not in the Drop Pod? (p32)

A: No, because squads that are placed in reserve may not break down into combat squads.

(So, logical rules lawyerly counter argument to the FAQ stolen from another blog:
Squads that ARE placed in reserve may not break down into combat squads' only refers to units actually in reserve. Once it's time for them to come on, they are deploying, no longer in reserve and the ruling no longer applies. Combat Squading after Podding is the precedent for 'deployment' and 'reserves' being seperate states, as they 'deploy' from the pod, and can therefore combat squad.

If they meant otherwise, the phrase would read 'squads that HAVE EVER BEEN placed in reserve may NEVER be broken down into combat squads'.)

Modular City Terrain

These are pictures of some modular ruins that I put together.  The challenge was elevating the little platform to the normal 3" height for use as a ruin in area terrain.  I am quite please with the result.  I have got to find a better way to take photos.  Need like a backing screen or something.  Not sure the living room creates the ambiance I am seeking.

Tower of Amadeo and other Red Terrain

Hi All,

Just wanted to leave some pics of the recent terrain/building/ruins painting projects.

In the BA fluff, the White Tower of Amadeo is like a sanitarium for the sons of Sanguinius who have fallen to the Black Rage.  As a longish term project, I have been converting the DA Fortress of Redemption to the BA White Tower of Amadeo.

My goal for when Pedro arrives is to have no grey plastic showing anywhere on our table.  I think that naked shiny grey plastic is just no way to wargame.

Tau Army Pics

Wanted to send out some pics to everyone in the Lower, showing off the new army that I am working on for the upcoming NOVA Open. Well that is not entirely true, pulling together an army to play against Hax during the weekend of the NOVA open, regardless I am pretty pumped about it! More pics to come as soon as I complete them.

Who put the XV in the XV-89 battle suit?

So I am currently reading "Savage Scars" a tale that recounts an imperium invasion on a Tau occupied world, told through the perpective of White Scars sergeant Sarik. I must say that it is quite the interesting read, providing some great fluff around the mysterious Tau. A great example of this is origination of th "XV" Crisis Suit, well at least the imperial name for it.

"The Departmento Tacticae reported that the tau term for these particular battle suits, which the crusade had encountered a single example of, was ‘hereks’vre’, which in their tongue meant the ‘mantle of the hero’. Already, the Tacticae had bastardised that term to codify the battle suits as ‘XV’ class rigs, with various sub-classes already identified."

Love coming across these little tid bits of background. Now enough blogging I have an army to paint!
